Lion's Mane Mushroom Benefits, Dosage and How to Use It

Lion's Mane Mushroom Benefits, Dosage and How to Use It

Written By: Nimbin Apothecary

Lion's mane mushroom (Hericium
erinaceus) is one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms in the world, and for good reason. With a growing body of evidence pointing to its potential benefits for brain health, memory, focus and nerve function, it has become one of the most sought-after natural supplements in Australia.

At Nimbin Apothecary, our qualified herbalists and naturopaths have been working with medicinal mushrooms for years, both dispensing them over the counter in our Nimbin shop and helping customers online find the right mushroom support for their needs. This guide draws on that hands-on experience alongside the available research to give you a practical, honest overview of what lion's mane can and cannot do.

What Is Lion's Mane Mushroom?

Lion's mane is a large, white, shaggy mushroom that grows on hardwood trees in temperate forests across Asia, Europe and North America. Its distinctive appearance — cascading white spines that resemble a lion's mane — makes it one of the most recognisable fungi in the world.

It has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years, where it is valued for its affinity with the brain and nervous system. In TCM, lion's mane is traditionally prescribed to support cognitive function, calm the mind and strengthen digestion. Buddhist monks are said to have used lion's mane powder in their tea to enhance concentration during meditation.

Today, lion's mane is available as a dried powder, capsule, tincture or as part of a mushroom elixir blend. At Nimbin Apothecary, we stock lion's mane as a pure mushroom powder that can be mixed into drinks or food.

Benefits of Lion's Mane Mushroom

Research into lion's mane has expanded significantly over the past decade. While much of the evidence comes from animal studies and small human trials, the results are promising and consistent with centuries of traditional use. Here is what the current evidence suggests.

Brain Health and Cognitive Function

This is the area where lion's mane has attracted the most attention. The mushroom contains two unique compounds — hericenones and erinacines — that have been shown in laboratory studies to stimulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). NGF is a protein that plays a critical role in the growth, maintenance and survival of neurons in the brain.

A 2009 study published in Phytotherapy Research found that older adults with mild cognitive impairment who took lion's mane powder for 16 weeks showed significantly improved cognitive function compared to a placebo group. When they stopped taking it, their scores declined again, suggesting the benefit requires ongoing use.

For anyone looking to support focus, clarity and long-term brain health, lion's mane is one of the most well-supported natural options available. Our Brain and Memory collection features lion's mane alongside other products chosen for cognitive support.

Nervous System Support

Beyond the brain itself, lion's mane may support the broader nervous system. The same NGF-stimulating compounds that benefit brain cells may also help support nerve repair and regeneration throughout the body. This has led to interest in lion's mane for people dealing with nerve-related discomfort.

If you are exploring natural support for your nervous system more broadly, our Sleep and Nervous System Support collection includes additional herbs like ashwagandha, passionflower and chamomile that complement lion's mane.

Immune Function

Like most medicinal mushrooms, lion's mane contains beta-glucans — complex polysaccharides that are known to modulate immune function. Beta-glucans work by activating key immune cells, helping your body mount a more efficient response to everyday challenges.

Lion's mane is not the only mushroom we stock for immune support. Our Immune Support collection includes turkey tail mushroom powder, medicinal mushroom blends and herbal extracts like echinacea, all chosen by our herbalists for their immune-strengthening properties

Digestive Health

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, lion's mane has long been used to support the stomach and digestive system. Modern research suggests it may help protect the stomach lining and support a healthy gut environment. This is consistent with what our herbalists observe in practice — many customers who take lion's mane report improvements in digestive comfort alongside the cognitive benefits.

For targeted digestive support, see our full Gut Health collection.

Energy and Vitality

While lion's mane is not a stimulant, many people report feeling more mentally alert and energised after consistent use. This is likely related to improved cognitive function and reduced brain fog rather than a direct energy boost. For those specifically looking for sustained energy support, our Energy and Vitality collection combines lion's mane with cordyceps, mushroom elixir and other adaptogenic products.

How to Take Lion's Mane Mushroom

Lion's mane powder is versatile and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Here are the most common ways our customers use it.

Mix half a teaspoon to one teaspoon of lion's mane powder into your morning coffee, tea, hot chocolate or smoothie. The flavour is mild and slightly earthy, so it blends well without overpowering your drink. Some people prefer to stir it into warm water with a little honey.

You can also add lion's mane powder to soups, broths and cooking. Heat does not destroy the key compounds, so feel free to experiment.

For a broader spectrum of mushroom benefits, try our Mushroom Elixir, which combines lion's mane with other medicinal mushrooms like cordyceps, reishi and turkey tail in a concentrated liquid form.

Consistency matters more than dose. Lion's mane is a tonic mushroom, which means it works best when taken daily over an extended period rather than as a one-off.

Dosage

There is no single universally agreed dosage for lion's mane, but based on the available research and our dispensary experience, a reasonable daily dose for most adults is between 1 and 3 grams of lion's mane mushroom powder per day. That is roughly half a teaspoon to one and a half teaspoons.

If you are new to medicinal mushrooms, start with a smaller amount (half a teaspoon) and increase gradually over a week or two. Most people notice a difference in mental clarity and focus after two to four weeks of consistent daily use.

If you are unsure about the right dose for your situation, our qualified herbalists are available to guide you — either in store at our Nimbin dispensary or via our online contact form.

What to Look for When Buying Lion's Mane

Not all lion's mane products are created equal. Here is what to check before you buy.

Look for products made from the fruiting body (the actual mushroom), not mycelium grown on grain. Fruiting body extracts contain higher concentrations of the beneficial compounds, particularly hericenones. Products grown on grain can contain a significant proportion of starch filler.

Check whether the product uses a dual extraction process (water and alcohol), which helps release both water-soluble beta-glucans and alcohol-soluble compounds like hericenones.

Avoid products with unnecessary fillers, binders or additives. A quality lion's mane powder should list only one ingredient: lion's mane mushroom.

Side Effects and Safety

Lion's mane is generally considered very safe. It has a long history of food use in Asia, and adverse effects in clinical trials have been rare and mild.

However, if you have a known allergy to mushrooms, avoid lion's mane. If you are taking blood thinning medications, consult your healthcare practitioner before using lion's mane, as it may interact with anticoagulants. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also seek professional advice before use.

As always, we recommend consulting with a qualified health professional before starting any new supplement, particularly if you have existing health conditions or are taking medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for lion's mane to work? Most people begin to notice improvements in mental clarity and focus within two to four weeks of daily use. Some people report benefits sooner, while for others it may take up to eight weeks. Consistency is key — lion's mane is a tonic mushroom that builds its effects over time.

Can I take lion's mane every day? Yes. Lion's mane is traditionally used as a daily tonic and is considered safe for ongoing use. In fact, the available research suggests that the benefits require consistent intake and may decline if you stop taking it.

Can I take lion's mane with other mushrooms? Absolutely. Many of our customers combine lion's mane with other medicinal mushrooms like cordyceps for energy, turkey tail for immune support, and chaga for antioxidant protection. Our Mushroom Elixir is designed to deliver a combination of medicinal mushrooms in one easy-to-take product.

Is lion's mane safe for children? We recommend consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner before giving lion's mane to children, as most research has been conducted in adults.

Does lion's mane help with anxiety? While lion's mane is not primarily used for anxiety, some research suggests it may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression through its effects on NGF and brain health. For herbal support specifically targeting anxiety and nervous system calm, see our Sleep and Nervous System Support collection.
