Description
Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) is one of the most soothing herbs in Western herbal medicine. Its effectiveness comes from its exceptionally high mucilage content, a gel-like substance that coats and protects irritated tissue throughout the digestive and respiratory systems. When you brew marshmallow root, it produces a thick, silky liquid that forms a protective barrier on mucous membranes, calming inflammation and easing discomfort.
This is certified organic marshmallow root selected by our qualified herbalists. Available in 50g and 100g bags. A staple in our dispensary for anyone dealing with gut irritation, sore throats or dry coughs.
Traditionally Used For
- Soothing inflamed or irritated digestive tract
- Reflux, heartburn and stomach discomfort
- Sore throats, dry coughs and respiratory irritation
- Protecting and healing gut lining
- Urinary tract soothing
- As a gentle demulcent for sensitive digestive systems
How to Use
As a cold infusion (best for maximum mucilage): Place 1 to 2 teaspoons of marshmallow root in a cup of cold water. Leave to steep for 4 to 8 hours or overnight. Strain and drink. The cold infusion extracts the most mucilage, producing a thick, soothing liquid.
As a hot tea: Simmer 1 to 2 teaspoons in a cup of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. Hot preparation is quicker but extracts slightly less mucilage than the cold method.
Take up to three times daily. Works well combined with other herbs. Our Fennel and Chamomile Reflux Tincture pairs particularly well for digestive soothing.

Is marshmallow root the same as marshmallow sweets? The sweets were originally made using marshmallow root extract, which gave them their soft, spongy texture. Modern marshmallows no longer contain the herb, but the name stuck. The dried root is a genuine medicinal herb with a long history of therapeutic use.
