Description
Yellow dock root (Rumex crispus) is a deeply valued herb in Western herbal medicine, traditionally used for detoxification, digestive support and as a natural source of plant-based iron. This is a wildcrafted dried root, selected by our qualified herbalists for quality and potency.
Yellow dock works by supporting the liver and promoting healthy elimination through the bowel. It is considered a gentle bitter tonic that stimulates bile flow, supports the body's natural detoxification pathways, and helps the body absorb iron more effectively from food. Available in 50g and 100g bags.
Traditionally Used For
- Iron support and improving iron absorption
- Liver support and gentle detoxification
- Chronic skin conditions linked to sluggish digestion or liver congestion
- Mild constipation and sluggish bowel
- Pregnancy tonic (combined with dandelion root, see recipe below)
How to Use
As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1 teaspoon of yellow dock root in 1 cup of water for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and drink. Take up to twice daily.
Dandelion and Yellow Dock Syrup (traditional iron tonic): 14g yellow dock root, 14g dandelion root. Simmer both herbs in 4 cups of water uncovered until reduced to one cup. Strain thoroughly and discard herb material. Add half a cup of molasses and mix until blended. Cool to room temperature and refrigerate. Keeps for up to 2 weeks. Dose: 1 to 2 tablespoons up to twice daily. Complement with nettle leaf tea for additional iron and mineral support.
Note: Yellow dock is a mild laxative. Start with a small amount to assess your response. Best avoided while breastfeeding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is yellow dock root good for iron deficiency? Yellow dock is traditionally valued as an iron-rich herb that also improves iron absorption from food. It is not a replacement for medical treatment of severe iron deficiency, but many herbalists use it as part of a broader iron support protocol. It pairs well with whole food iron sources like our Vitality Pills (chicken liver capsules).
Can I take yellow dock during pregnancy? Yellow dock combined with dandelion root is a traditional pregnancy tonic (see recipe above). However, consult your midwife or healthcare practitioner before using any herbal product during pregnancy.
What does wildcrafted mean? Wildcrafted means the herb was harvested from its natural wild habitat rather than farmed. Wildcrafted herbs are often considered more potent because they grow in their natural conditions without intervention.
How does yellow dock taste? It has an earthy, slightly bitter flavour typical of root herbs. The bitterness is part of its therapeutic action as a digestive bitter. Adding honey or combining with other herbs in a blend can soften the taste.
