Calendula for Skin: Benefits of Calendula Balm, Oil and Dried Flowers

Calendula for Skin: Benefits of Calendula Balm, Oil and Dried Flowers

Written By: Sammi

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is one of the most trusted skin healing herbs in the world. With bright golden-yellow petals and a long history of use in European, Ayurvedic and folk medicine traditions, calendula has earned its place as a go-to herb for anyone dealing with dry, irritated, damaged or inflamed skin.

At Nimbin Apothecary, calendula holds a special place. We grow it ourselves on our farm in the Northern Rivers hinterland, harvest it by hand, and use it across three different product formats: a healing balm, an infused oil, and dried flowers for tea and topical washes. Our qualified herbalists and naturopaths have been working with calendula for over 35 years, and this guide shares what we have learned about getting the most from this remarkable plant.

What Makes Calendula So Good for Skin?

Calendula's skin healing properties come from a combination of active compounds that work together. The flowers contain triterpenoids (particularly faradiol) which are responsible for its anti-inflammatory action. Flavonoids provide antioxidant protection. Carotenoids give the petals their distinctive golden colour and support skin cell repair. Mucilage soothes and protects irritated tissue. And saponins contribute to the plant's gentle cleansing and antimicrobial properties.

What makes calendula stand out from other skin herbs is its versatility. It is gentle enough for sensitive skin, safe for use on babies and children, and effective across a wide range of skin concerns from minor wounds to chronic dryness to inflammatory skin conditions.

Research supports what herbalists have known for centuries. Studies have shown calendula to promote wound healing, reduce inflammation, and exhibit antimicrobial activity against common skin pathogens. A 2013 review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found evidence supporting calendula's use in wound healing and dermatological conditions.

Calendula Balm: Concentrated Healing in a Jar

Our Calendula Balm is made from calendula grown right here in our Apothecary garden, harvested and dried carefully to retain the plant's full potency. The flowers are then infused into organic carrier oils and blended into a rich, protective balm.

A balm is a thicker, more concentrated format than a cream or oil. It creates a protective barrier on the skin that locks in moisture and delivers the active compounds directly where they are needed. This makes calendula balm ideal for dry, cracked or rough skin on hands, feet, elbows and lips. It is excellent for minor cuts, grazes and abrasions where you want to protect the wound while supporting healing. It works well for nappy rash and cradle cap on babies (calendula is one of the gentlest herbs available for infant skin). And it provides relief for chapped or weather-damaged skin, particularly in colder months.

Our calendula balm sits alongside our Comfrey Balm and Green Healer Balm in our From Our Farm Herbal Balms and Creams collection. Every product in that collection is handcrafted on our property using herbs we grow ourselves.

Calendula Infused Oil: Versatile Skin Nourishment

Our Calendula Infused Oil is made from garden to bottle. The calendula is grown in the Northern Rivers region, carefully harvested, and infused in a base of almond oil using
special extraction methods to maximise its therapeutic value.

An infused oil has a lighter consistency than a balm, which makes it more versatile. Calendula oil is suited for soothing itchy or inflamed skin conditions where you need gentle, non-irritating relief. It works well as a nourishing body oil or facial oil for dry or mature skin. It is an excellent massage oil for babies and infants. It can be used as a base ingredient if you make your own salves, creams or skincare products at home. And it pairs beautifully with essential oils for custom skincare blends.

The almond oil base adds its own skin benefits, being rich in vitamin E, fatty acids and emollient properties that soften and protect the skin.

Our full range of farm-made infused oils, including Comfrey Infused Oil and Mugwort Infused Oil, is available in our From Our Farm Infused Oils collection.

Dried Calendula Flowers: Tea, Baths and Topical Washes

Our Calendula Flowers are farm-grown, dried whole flowers that offer the most versatile way to use this herb. The bright yellow marigold petals are considered to have broad-acting benefits and can be used in several ways.

As a herbal tea, calendula flowers make a mild, slightly sweet infusion that supports skin health from the inside out. Calendula tea is traditionally used for digestive soothing and gentle internal anti-inflammatory support. As a topical wash, a strong infusion of calendula flowers can be used as an antibacterial skin wash for minor wounds, irritated skin or as a gentle face rinse. Added to bath water, calendula flowers release their soothing compounds into the bath, making it a gentle skin treatment for the whole body. We have added calendula flowers to some of our bath products for this reason.

Dried calendula flowers sit in our From Our Farm Dried Herbs collection alongside chamomile, lemon balm, tulsi and other herbs grown on our property.

Balm vs Oil vs Dried Flowers: Which Should You Choose?

The best format depends on what you are using it for.

Choose the balm when you need concentrated, targeted healing on a specific area. It is thicker, stays in place longer, and creates a protective barrier. Best for wounds, cracks, rough patches and lips.

Choose the oil when you want broader coverage or a lighter application. It absorbs into the skin more easily and works well as a daily moisturiser, baby massage oil, or base for blending. Best for general skin nourishment, itchy skin and larger areas.

Choose the dried flowers when you want the most flexibility. You can brew them as tea for internal benefits, make a topical wash, add them to baths, or even infuse your own oil at home. Best for people who like to prepare their own herbal remedies.

Many of our customers use more than one format. The balm on their hands and lips, the oil on their body after showering, and calendula tea as part of their daily herbal routine. Our herbalists can help you work out the best combination for your skin concerns.

Calendula and Your Broader Skincare Routine

Calendula works well alongside other natural skincare products. For a complete face care routine, our Face and Body collection features moisturisers like our Marshmallow Moisturiser and Rose and Lavender Moisturiser, botanical face toners, and nourishing body oils.

For skin conditions that also involve pain or inflammation, combining calendula with our Arnica and Comfrey Cream can address both the skin healing and the pain relief aspects. Our full handmade range is in the Creams and Ointments collection, where every product has been refined over more than 25 years of dispensary practice.

Safety and Suitability

Calendula is one of the safest herbs available for topical use. It is gentle enough for babies, children and people with sensitive skin. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, particularly if you have a known sensitivity to plants in the Asteraceae family (daisies, chamomile, ragweed). If in doubt, do a small patch test before applying to a larger area. For internal use as a tea, calendula is generally considered safe. However, pregnant women should consult a healthcare practitioner before using calendula internally, as it has traditionally been associated with emmenagogue (menstruation- romoting) effects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is calendula good for eczema? Calendula is widely used as a soothing topical treatment for eczema and other inflammatory skin conditions. Its anti-inflammatory and emollient properties help calm irritation, reduce redness and protect the skin barrier. Many of our customers with eczema use our calendula balm or oil as part of their daily management routine. While it is not a cure, it can provide significant relief alongside other treatments.

Can I use calendula on my baby's skin? Yes. Calendula is one of the gentlest skin herbs available and is commonly used for nappy rash, cradle cap, dry patches and general skin nourishment in babies and infants. Our calendula balm and infused oil are both suitable for baby skin.

What is the difference between calendula and marigold? Calendula officinalis is sometimes called "pot marigold" but it is different from the common garden marigold (Tagetes species). They are in the same family but different genera. When you see "calendula" on a herbal product, it refers specifically to Calendula officinalis, which is the species with the documented skin healing properties.

How long does it take for calendula to heal skin? For minor wounds and irritation, many people notice improvement within a few days of regular application. For chronic skin conditions like eczema or persistent dryness, consistent use over two to four weeks typically yields the best results. Calendula works cumulatively, so regular daily application is more effective than occasional use.

Can I make my own calendula oil at home? Yes. Place dried calendula flowers in a clean glass jar, cover completely with a carrier oil like olive or almond oil, seal and leave in a warm spot for four to six weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain through muslin cloth. Our dried Calendula Flowers are perfect for this if you want to make your own. However, our farm-made Calendula Infused Oil uses special extraction methods that maximise potency beyond what a simple home infusion achieves.

Why Our Calendula Is Different

Most calendula products on the market use commercially sourced, mass-dried calendula of unknown origin. Ours is different because we grow it ourselves. Our herbalists tend the plants, harvest the flowers at peak potency, dry them carefully to preserve the active compounds, and then transform them into balms, oils and dried herb products in our Nimbin dispensary.

This farm-to-product approach gives us complete control over quality at every stage. You know exactly where the calendula came from, who grew it, and how it was processed. That is something a mass-produced product from an anonymous supply chain simply cannot offer.

We have been doing this since 1990, and our calendula products have stood the test of time because they work. If you have questions about which calendula product is right for your skin, get in touch. Our qualified herbalists are always happy to help.
